7 Prayers for Overcoming Temptations, Trials and Vices

Daily, we face lots of temptations.

It could be fornication, adultery, smoking, drunkenness, lying, drug abuse, masturbation, or other forms of sexual immoralities.

Whatever the case, we must resist the devil and his deceits.

The scriptures say, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith.”

Through prayers, you can avoid the temptations of your body.

In times of trouble, you must seek God’s help and strength to redeem yourself.

I have put together this prayer to overcome temptations. Amen.

Short prayers to avoid temptations

Prayer for Overcoming Temptations, Trials and Vices

Father in heaven, I approach Your throne of grace with gratitude in my heart. Just like Your Word tells us in Ephesians 2:8, “For it is by grace you have been saved,” I’m grateful. Even as a sinner, You chose to save me. Your mercy is overwhelming.

Oh, the wonder of Your divine protection! Like the psalmist says in Psalm 91:2, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust,” You shield me. The devil’s snares and my adversaries’ ploys cannot harm me. Your fortress of love surrounds me. I’m forever thankful for that.

In the stormy times of life, I turn to You, Father. Just like in Psalm 46:1, where You’re called “our refuge and strength,” I seek Your strength. During these trials, I find solace in Your grace.

Almighty Father, I sometimes wrestle with my own desires. Like Paul expresses in Romans 7:19, “For I do not do the good I want to do,” I struggle. In these moments, I ask You to redeem me. I trust in Your divine intervention.

Lord, without You, I am lost. Your Word reminds us in John 15:5, “apart from me you can do nothing.” I need You. Save me from my own flaws and guide me on Your path.

You are a God of abundance, Father. I strive for contentment in Your blessings, as Your Word advises in Philippians 4:12, “I have learned the secret of being content.” Teach me this secret, Lord. Help me value the blessings You’ve showered upon me.

Holy Spirit, I ask for Your strength. When temptations surround me, I need Your help. Like 2 Corinthians 12:10 says, “For when I am weak, then I am strong,” I trust in Your power. Fortify me with Your divine resilience.

Lastly, I seek Your guidance, Lord Jesus. Your Word, Psalm 119:105, says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” Teach me Your holy word. Let it guide my steps, illuminating the darkness.

In Your magnificent name, I pray. Lord, may Your will be done. Amen.

Let us ask for forgiveness (let us pray)

Prayer for Overcoming Temptations, Trials and Vices

Almighty Father, I approach You today. Humbly. Reverently. You are the Majestic One. The Creator. My heart seeks Your mercy, Your strength.

Without You? I am nothing.

You see me, Father. You know me. My weaknesses. My temptations. They are all laid bare before You.

Lord Jesus, Saviour, I ask for pardon. I’ve walked away from Your path. Your laws. Your commands. I’ve faltered. Stumbled. And now, I seek Your grace.

The truth? It’s simple. I can’t hide from You, The All-knowing One. I crave Your forgiveness.

Our Holy Scripture tells us, “No one is righteous, no one is without sin.” (Romans 3:10). A fact I acknowledge. A truth I lean into. A call for Your merciful touch.

It is Your grace, Father, I seek today. For my failings. For my sins. Wash them away, Lord. Let my prayers reach Your ears. Hear my heart. Hear my plea.

May my faults not block Your blessings. The bounty You wish to pour. I seek Your mercy. Your absolution.

As I bow before You, I whisper words of gratitude. Gracious Father, thank You. Your love never fails. Your mercies? Fresh each day. A promise from the book of Lamentations 3:22-23.

Almighty, to You, I owe my redemption. My hope. My faith.

In Your Powerful and Holy Name, I offer this prayer. Amen.

Test or temptations, I will overcome (let us pray)

Prayer for Overcoming Temptations, Trials and Vices

Dear Father, our Mighty Fortress,

You’re the One and Only, the Power Above All. That’s what Your Word, the Bible, tells us. We’re reminded of Matthew 6:13. There, You tell us to pray to not fall into temptation. It’s also about getting us free from the evil one.

So, I seek more. I yearn for insight. Wisdom from Your Word. I want to understand the devil’s sly ways.

I reflect on Your faithful ones. Abraham. Job. You helped them when faced with temptations. Lord, I seek the same grace. The same strength in testing times.

Help me choose the right path. Always. That’s my prayer.

I stumble. I falter. In these moments, give me strength. In my doubts and weaknesses, remind me of Your love. Remind me of my duty to You.

Fear. Lust. These often lead me into temptation. But James 1:14 reminds us how these desires can drag us away. Entice us.

So, I surrender. My mind, my soul. To You. With this surrender, I find control. Strength in You. Trust in You.

Help me, O Lord. Help me weather every storm. Every test. And pass. That’s my prayer.

I ask for a content heart. A heart faithful to Your Word. Proverbs 15:16 says, “Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble with it.” Lord, help me live this verse.

In all this, I thank You. The Almighty. The Provider. The Alpha and Omega. Thank You, gracious Lord. Amen.

Jesus overcame all temptations (let us pray)

Prayer for Overcoming Temptations, Trials and Vices

Beloved Father in the Heavens,

Please, wrap me in the warm blanket of Your wisdom. Your Word, Lord, is my armor. Help me wear it always (Ephesians 6:11). Let it guard my heart, strengthening my resolve against temptation’s grasp.

Your Word is my sanctuary. May I find power within its timeless truths (Hebrews 4:12). Power to resist temptation. Power to stay rooted on Your holy path.

You, Almighty, are the rock on which my faith stands. This faith, Lord, is my victory banner. It waves high above every challenge, every temptation (1 John 5:4). Nourish this faith, Father. Let it blossom, let it flourish.

Remember Job, Lord? You crafted a master escape plan for him (Job 42:12). Amid trials, amid suffering, You transformed his story. His latter days shone brighter than his first. I seek the same, Father. Craft my escape plan too. Show me the light when darkness tempts me.

My desires, Father, can be wild. They can be strong. But You, Lord, are stronger. In my deepest lusts, in my greatest wants, guide me. Lead me back to Your loving arms (Psalm 23:3).

Your words ring loud, Lord. They say, “No temptation is too great” (1 Corinthians 10:13). You’ve got my back. You won’t let me face more than I can bear. You, the Compassionate, provide an escape. A way to endure.

Your faithfulness is my hope, Lord. It’s my lifeboat in stormy seas. Save me from myself, Father. Lead me through temptation’s maze. Guide me safely to the other side.

Grace, Father, is what I seek. Grace to slip free from sinful desires. Grace to live righteously (Titus 2:11-12). Pour Your grace upon me, Lord.

Finally, thank You, Father. Thank You for listening. Thank You for being there. You, the King of Kings, have answered my prayer.

Amen.

Strength in weakness (let us pray)

Prayer for Overcoming Temptations, Trials and Vices

Dear Heavenly Father,

You, the ever-steadfast Rock of Ages, have always been the fortress for the frail. You’ve turned weakness into strength since the dawn of time. Today, I humbly seek this divine might. I need it to triumph over life’s trials and my own harmful habits.

Think of when Peter walked on water, Lord. He began to sink when his faith wavered. Yet, your hand was there to lift him up (Matthew 14:28-31). I pray for the same hand to reach out and erase my negative behaviors.

I yearn for freedom, Father. Freedom from the weight of vulgarity, immorality, and dishonor that burdens my soul. I look to your cleansing love, much like the love you demonstrated when you forgave the woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11). Let this same love permeate my heart, guide my thoughts, and direct my actions.

You’ve promised us strength, Lord. Strength for those who hope in you. This promise, etched in the pages of our hearts and the verses of Isaiah (40:31), offers comfort. It gives us wings to soar high, run without weariness, and walk without fainting. I latch onto this promise, Almighty God.

Into your able hands, I place my trust. Trust that you will shield me from the sharp claws of temptation. Trust that you, who resisted Satan in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11), will protect me too.

Gracious Father, I plead for endurance. The same endurance that Paul spoke about in Romans (5:3-4). An endurance that develops character and results in hope. Gift me with the strength to face my weaknesses head-on. Let me brave the storms of lust and pain, firmly rooted in your grace.

I stand before you, Lord, a testament to your goodness. I know you hear me, just as you heard Hannah’s silent prayer (1 Samuel 1:9-20). You are my refuge, my pillar of strength, my harbor in the storm. I thank you for your unwavering love, your boundless mercy, and your assured response to my plea.

In your holy and mighty name, I say, Amen.

Examine yourself (let us pray)

Prayer for Overcoming Temptations, Trials and Vices

Dear Father, in Your divine wisdom, I reach out. I yearn for Your word, with a zeal I’ve never known.

Send Your wisdom, the Almighty. Let it infuse my heart. Meld the pieces of my soul. As Hebrews 4:12 teaches us, Your Word is alive. It’s potent. It cuts through, reaching the innermost parts of our being.

So, Father, I pray. Allow Your Word to grace my life today. And always.

Let it be my compass, Father. Lead me to Your ways. Guide me through Your commandments. Your scripture is a lamp to my feet, a light to my path (Psalms 119:105). I need it.

Grant me discernment, Lord. Help me separate good from evil. As advised in 2 Corinthians 13:5, we must examine ourselves. Test ourselves. For Christ resides within us, unless we’ve fallen short.

I seek Your Spirit of truth, Lord. Remind me of Your laws. Let Your Word be etched in my heart, a wellspring of wisdom.

Bless me with contentment, Jesus. I have all I need in Your blessings. Let my joy stem from overcoming temptations. Not in worldly pursuits. For the love of the world is enmity with God (James 4:4).

Remove the desire for worldly things from my life, Father. Your kingdom is my true inheritance. Bless me with the courage to seek Your kingdom first, knowing all else will follow (Matthew 6:33).

My heart overflows with gratitude, Lord. For Your prayers answered. For Your mercies new each day.

In Your holy name, Amen.
