Marriage is honorable and a life long commitment.
Once you are in, there are little or no options available for an exit.
For Christians, we know there are only two ways to get a divorce – Either through an act of infidelity or when an unbelieving partner decides to walk away.
If that’s the case, we know we must be physically and mentally ready to tie the knot.
But it is not that simple, and the truth is, there is no perfect recipe for a successful union.
I experience it myself; Despite dating my wife for about five years, we had a disastrous first month of marriage.
Just a few weeks into our marriage, we were already talking about a divorce. Ironically, we were both firm believers of Christ.
Despite weeks of counseling sessions from our local church, we still did not get it right.
Because we did not fully accept our roles as husband and wife.
That’s where bible verses about marriage come in.
Marriage is a spiritual union, and it is important you start seeing it that way.
These bible verses are simple to understand (with the grace of the holy spirit). You only need to digest and obey them. If you do, your marriage will be filled with happiness as mine is now.
I have compiled bible verses about marriage between men and women that should inspire you.
Bible verses about marriage between man and woman
I have compiled 15 inspirational bible verses about marriage. Read and be blessed.
1. Proverbs 18:22 – Marriage is a good thing in God’s sight
He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.
2. Hebrews 13:4 — Marriage is honorable
Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral
3. 1 John 4:7– Love in marriage
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God
4. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 — Two joined together as one is always better
Two are better than one,because they have a good return for their labor:If either of them falls down,one can help the other up. But pity anyone who fallsand has no one to help them up.
Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.But how can one keep warm alone?Though one may be overpowered,two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken
5. Leviticus 21:13-15 — Marriage should be undefiled
The woman he marries must be a virgin. 14 He must not marry a widow, a divorced woman, or a woman defiled by prostitution, but only a virgin from his own people, 15 so that he will not defile his offspring among his people. I am the Lord, who makes him holy
6. Romans 7:1-3 — Marriage is only broken by death
Do you not know, brothers and sisters—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? 2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him. 3 So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man
7. Exodus 22:16 — The old laws require compulsory marriage in cases of rape
“If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife
8. Proverbs 31:10-31 — A good wife is hard to find
A wife of noble character who can find?She is worth far more than rubies
9. Ephesians 5:22-25 –Women submit to the authority of your husband
Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her
10. Isaiah 62:5 –Getting married is righteous
As a young man marries a young woman,so will your Builder marry you; as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride,so will your God rejoice over you.
11. Mark 10:6-9 –A man will be joined to a woman and become one flesh
But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[b] 8 and the two will become one flesh.’So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
12. 1 Peter 3:1-5 –Ladies, submit to your husband in everything
Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won overwithout words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands
13. 1 Corinthians 7:1-5 — The man or woman does not have complete control of his/her body
Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” 2 But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. 3 The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5 Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
14. 1 Corinthians 7:8-9 –Widows can re-marry to prevent sin
To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single, as I am. 9 But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
10 To the married I give this charge (not I, but the Lord): the wife should not separate from her husband 11 (but if she does, she should remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband), and the husband should not divorce his wife.
15. Malachi 2:13-16 — Do not be unfaithful to your wife. God hates a man that divorces his wife.
Another thing you do: You flood the Lord’s altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer looks with favor on your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. 14 You ask, “Why?” It is because the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.
15 Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth.
16 “The man who hates and divorces his wife,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “does violence to the one he should protect,” says the LordAlmighty.
What does the bible say about marriage?
Getting married is an honorable thing to do. God is happy when we decide to commit ourselves to the covenant of love.
But what does marriage really mean in the Eyes of God? Does God allow equality in marriage? Does he accept a divorce if we feel we are no longer happy with the marriage?
First, let us examine the first marriage in the world. God created Adam after creating everything on the earth.
He put Adam in the Garden of Eden and said;
“It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
So, God performed the first surgery of the world, took a rib from Adam and created the woman. When Adam saw the woman, he said;
This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh
Here are two takeaways from the story of Adam and Eve
1. The man is the HEAD and the woman a HELPER
The world has changed a lot. We now have different ideas of how a marriage should be. In fact, it has been suggested that a marriage must be a 50:50 thing.
In other words, the husband and wife both make up the head of the family. But is this what the bible teaches?
God created a “helper” for the man. He created the woman to assist the man in all he does.
After the disobedience of Adam and Eve, God said unto the woman;
I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; In sorrow shall thy bring forth children; and they desire shall be unto thy husband, and he shall rule over thee
Paul an apostle of Jesus Christ said;
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
1 Corinthians 11:3
God has set a laid down hierarchy for marriage. The man is the head of the woman, and similarly, Christ is the head of the man.
Paul repeated this message in his letter to the Christian at Ephesians. He said;
Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
2. The man must love his wife as himself
For wives, submitting to your husband is not a piece of advice. It is the commandment of God.
One may ask Does God disregard the rights of women?
Absolutely NO. God expects husbands to love their wives in return.
Adam described his wife as “the bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” If therefore a man maltreats his wife, he hurt his own bones and flesh.
Jesus said We must love one another as he has loved us (John 13:34). Thus, Jesus expects that as Christians, a man must love his wife with everything.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body.
31 “For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband
Ephesians 5: 25-33
